In the nineteenth century, the 18K yellow gold bangle was a fundamental form in French jewelry, combining structural simplicity with refined execution. Made from an alloy of 750‰ gold, it provided an optimal balance between mechanical strength, ductility, and color stability—essential qualities for a piece subjected to repeated wear on the wrist. Its warm tone, subtly enriched by the presence of copper in the alloy, aligned with the aesthetic preferences of the period.
From a construction standpoint, the bangle could be either a rigid one-piece ring or a hinged structure composed of two halves connected by a pivot. Opening models typically featured a snap clasp, often reinforced with a safety chain. Cross-sections varied—round, oval, flat, or hollow—with hollow construction allowing for substantial visual volume while minimizing weight.
Decoratively, these bangles reflected the stylistic currents of the century. Surfaces could be polished, chased, engine-turned, or engraved. Some examples incorporated vegetal motifs, neoclassical ornamentation, or set gemstones, while others favored a more restrained approach focused on the quality of the gold itself.
Worn individually or stacked, 18K yellow gold bangles were common among the upper and middle classes. Today, they are studied for their craftsmanship, structural diversity, and their role in the evolution of nineteenth-century jewelry practices.
