In the 1950s, pearl necklaces featuring white gold clasps set with diamonds became a standard of feminine elegance, both in France and internationally. This period, marked by a return to classical aesthetics after World War II, emphasized clean lines, symmetry, and material quality. The pearls used were predominantly cultured pearls, particularly from Japan, whose production expanded significantly thanks to techniques developed by Kokichi Mikimoto.
These necklaces were typically composed of single or multiple strands, with carefully calibrated stringing (either graduated or uniform in diameter) and knotting between each pearl to reduce wear and improve security. The clasp, both a functional and decorative element, became a focal point: crafted in 18-carat white gold, it was often set with brilliant-cut or baguette-cut diamonds, sometimes arranged in geometric or stylized floral motifs.
From a technical standpoint, the clasp incorporated a box or snap mechanism with an additional safety latch, ensuring reliable closure. The relationship between the weight of the pearls and the mechanical resistance of the clasp was a key design parameter. White gold, often rhodium-plated, enhanced the brilliance of the diamonds while maintaining visual continuity with the nacre.
These necklaces reflect a form of jewelry that is both functional and refined, where technical precision supports a timeless aesthetic. Today, they remain reference pieces, valued for their balance of restraint, craftsmanship, and understated sophistication.
