The natural pearl necklace
In 19th-century Paris, natural pearl necklaces were symbols of elegance and refinement, prized by the aristocracy and haute bourgeoisie. Worn in single or multiple strings, these necklaces enhanced the outfits of society ladies, particularly at balls and receptions. During the Second Empire, fashion icon Empress Eugénie contributed to their popularity by frequently wearing pearl necklaces inspired by the splendor of the XVIIIᵉ century.
Parisian jewelers such as Cartier and Mellerio vied with each other to create sumptuous models, sometimes embellished with diamonds or precious clasps. Even today, these necklaces remain timeless pieces, testifying to the exceptional taste and craftsmanship of 19thᵉ century Parisian jewelry.
