In the late 1940s, Tank bracelets held a distinctive place in Parisian jewellery. Instantly recognizable for their generous proportions and architectural construction, they combined strong geometric lines with a more sculptural approach to gold.
Usually crafted in 18k yellow gold, sometimes combined with rose gold, Tank bracelets were constructed from a succession of articulated links: rounded rolls, gadroons, rectangular elements and interlocking geometric motifs. The substantial amount of gold gave these bracelets their characteristic weight and presence, while sophisticated articulation allowed them to remain supple and comfortable around the wrist.
What makes these pieces particularly appealing today is the remarkable modernity of their design. Oversized links, polished surfaces and an almost industrial aesthetic give Tank bracelets a surprisingly contemporary appearance. Their bold geometry perfectly matches today’s taste for substantial gold jewellery and statement pieces.
Worn alone on a bare wrist, paired with a minimalist outfit or mixed with contemporary jewellery, a vintage Tank bracelet has a distinctly fashion-forward character. Nearly eighty years after these designs were created, their strong proportions and graphic lines remain strikingly relevant.
The Tank period
Due to the beginning of the Second World War in 1939, platinum was rare and gold became the metal used by jewelers. Rose gold was often used as well as other color variations of gold to give an effect of contrast (yellow and rose gold).
A new trend is asserting itself and new jewels are making their appearance, the time is for exuberance and imposing creations that emerges from the workshops of the creators. We remain in the abstraction of Art Deco, even if representations of nature survive here and there.
